When I a verse shall make,
Know I have pray'd thee,
For old religion's sake,
Saint Ben to aid me.
Make the way smooth for me,
When I, thy Herrick,
Honouring thee, on my knee
Offer my lyric.
Candles I'll give to thee,
And a new altar,
And thou, Saint Ben, shalt be
Writ in my psalter.

Is this some sort of homage to a man about to be married? Not sure I get this one. St. Ben? Hmmm. -
I disagree with the above. It flows just fine, the rhythm is clean and crisp, and it is not only a poem, but, an ode as well.
I find this to be a good piece, but, I have read better by Herrick's.

This one does not flow as easily as the other oldpoetry I have read today. St. Ben? I am thinking this is might be a kind of tongue in cheek. But I could be wrong. 'Old religion's sake' - could he be referring to pagan religions there? A simple poem in a lot of ways, the rhyming scheme makes is almost sing song.
